Attorney and philanthropist Franklin A. Thomas (May 27, 1934 â December 22, 2021) was the first African American president of the Ford Foundation, the trust endowed by automobile manufacturer Henry Ford.
He was born in Brooklyn. He was one of six children born to West Indian immigrants James and Viola Thomas. When James died, Viola found work as a housekeeper and as a machinist during WWII. He was a leader in school, sports, and the Boy Scouts. He enrolled in Columbia University on an academic scholarship, desiring to be judged more for his intelligence than for his athletic ability. He played on the Columbia basketball team, becoming the first Black captain of an Ivy League basketball team.
He graduated and spent four years in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, attaining the rank of captain. He returned to Columbia University and received his JD. He served as an attorney for the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency and as an assistant US attorney in New York. Senator Robert Kennedy appointed him president of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. It became the national model for community-based redevelopment efforts.
He worked for two years in private practice until he was asked by the Rockefeller Foundation to head a study of apartheid. He was appointed president of the Ford Foundation. At the time he took over the organization. He conducted a comprehensive review and announced drastic changes that included staff and programming cuts, a move that drew criticism internally and externally. He had increased the fundâs endowment and had shifted focus toward issues relating to urban poverty. The foundation also funded human rights organizations and anti-apartheid initiatives.
He retired from the Ford Foundation and has served on the boards of directors for major companies like Citicorp and Pepsi Co. He was chairman of the September 11th Fund and was a consultant of the TFF Study Group. He was a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.

I watched ćæąć”ăłăăł episode 100 today!! :D
I still need to put in much more work into my listening comprehension and vocabulary but for now, this is a nice milestone. In this post I want to share my experiences.
What I did
I not only watched these episodes, I also worked my way through the subtitles. I changed my approach over time but it looked basically like this:
reading subtitles and looking up words (on my computer)
putting words and phrases into Anki for later review (details below)
watching the episode (via BluRay)
(repeat process with the next episode)
Unfortunately, I wasn't very consistent. Most of the time I didnât manage to finish the whole process for one episode per day (I'm working full-time). Sometimes I watched several episodes a day (before reading the subtitles) and sometimes I didn't watched any episode for a few days or even weeks.
I wanted to be more consistent but working through one episode took more time than I thought. Plus, on some days I just wanted to do something different like reading a novel or manga or listening to a podcast in Japanese. âAll Conan all the timeâ would have been more beneficial for my listening comprehension (for this series) but I needed the variety.
Difficulty
Many Japanese learners recommend to start with slice of life anime to train your listening comprehension and I agree. But since I donât really like slice of life and because I love ćæąć”ăłăăł I watch it despite the fact that my listening comprehension and vocabulary is not strong enough yet. So this choice obviously comes more from the heart than the brain. XD
Iâve read somewhere that after around 20 or 30 episodes, understanding a series becomes easier because at this point one is quite familiar with the regular vocabulary. With ćæąć”ăłăăł my experience is âa bit differentâ. (If it was easier for you, please tell me your secrets :D)
Even after 100 episodes it feels by no means easy. I understand some parts but most of the time I still struggle and miss a lot (even though I understood the subtitles). However, I also learned a lot along the way. Some episodes were less complex than others and I was able to understand most of what the characters said. This gave me hope that over time I will understand more and more of the complex episodes, too.
(There are several reasons but) one reason why this series is challenging is the wide range of topics: business/economy, crime/police, finance/money, law, medicine, traffic, chemistry, art, cinema/ TV, sport, music, botany/plants, and maybe even some more I donât remember right now.
To comfortably watch this series you not only need to know the crime-related and daily-life vocabulary, but also a ton of words from other areas as well.
The topic changes with every case, which makes every case a new challenge. This means, learning words from this episode doesnât necessarily prepare you that much for the next. (I mean, not as much as by watching a series with only a few central topics.)
When I started I expected that it will become easier after 50 or 60 episodes. It was interesting to see that even after working through so many episodes I still come across quite a lot new words (depending on the topic). For example: In episode 97 I looked up 37 new words and phrases.
Let's see if it gets better after another 100 episodes. :D
Review
I gave Anki (flashcard program) another chance and it works quite well so far. Over the course of 100 episodes, I collected 546 words and phrases in my deck. These were my criteria:
word/phrase came up at least 3 times in more than one episode or case
the sentence gives me enough context
word/phrase I know in writing but not (fast enough) when listening
Reviewing these words helps me to not only recognize more words in general but also understand them fast enough while listening.

⊠even after 100 episodes Iâm still far away from understanding ćæąć”ăłăăł comfortably. Partly because I wasnât as consistent as I wanted to be and because I didnât listen more often to each episode. But also because this series is very challenging language-wise, so I think itâs only natural that it takes much more time. But it's not as bad as it sounds! I love that there is so much to learn. Every episode is a new challenge and a new chance to grow.
On to the next 100 episodes!

Project 1 - Project Proposal
1. Overall
Everyone is concerned about their health status. With the development of smart bracelet products, the detection of user health status is becoming more and more accurate. However, most of the current health management software is still at the stage of data detection and presentation, and the sports courses provided in the software are simply listed, lacking pertinence and adaptability. If artificial intelligence technology is combined with smart bracelets, it will be possible to create a product with more comprehensive functions, more personalized, and better meet user needs.
2. Problem
(1) Single data presentation function
Take the "Sports Health" APP in Honor mobile phones as an example. The "Health" module on the homepage simply presents the collected data and lacks analysis and evaluation based on the overall data.
(2) The homepage layout can be adjusted
The most important top card on the platform homepage only presents the number of steps, calories burned and exercise time. If you want to view other data, you need to pull down to the corresponding module to view it. The user experience can be optimized.

(3) Lack of advice and guidance functions
Different users have different purposes for using sports and health products, and they also want to achieve different goals after exercise. However, the platform currently does not provide professional advice and guidance.
(4) The training plan function lacks specificity and flexibility
Although the platform provides many courses, they are simply listed without personalized recommendations for different users. This makes it a challenge for newcomers to choose the right one from a large number of programs. At the same time, the APP currently only allows users to add exercise plans for fixed courses, which lacks flexibility.
(5) Lack of official activities
Currently there are no incentives or operational activities on the platform.
(6) The mall page design is bloated
There are too many main buttons on the mall page, their functions are repeated, and their meanings are unclear. At the same time, the marketing advertisements on the mall page account for too large a proportion, and the real product list is placed at the very bottom, affecting the user experience.
3. Proposed Solution
(1) Add health status analysis function
Add artificial intelligence to the software. After connecting with the smart bracelet, it can detect, present and analyze the user's exercise volume, heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, body temperature, sleep status and other indicators in real time, and automatically save and upload them to the APP. Evaluate health status based on the analysis results every day.
(2) Redesign the homepage data presentation module
The real-time data card at the top of the homepage can be redesigned to present more information, or allow users to customize the content presented in the card, so that users can view the data they want to see more quickly.
(3) Add smart health assistant function
Allow users to communicate directly with the generative artificial intelligence in the platform. When users send their current status, daily exercise time and goals they want to achieve, the health assistant will provide professional advice and plans on exercise and diet based on user needs and health data, including daily exercise plans, weekly exercise goals, etc. Users can also continue to communicate with the assistant in questions and answers.
(4) Add personalized recommendation function
Based on the user's current status and goals, personalized recommendations are made for courses in the platform, and users can freely customize their own training plans.
(5) Increase operational activities and communities
The platform can increase operational activities and rewards. For example, when users complete exercise goals or other incentive activities on the platform, they can get platform currency as an incentive. Platform currency can be used when shopping in the platform's mall or exchanged for platform membership time to promote users' exercise enthusiasm and activity.
The platform can increase sharing and display functions.
